Hydrocracking merupakan suatu proses yang mengkonversi umpan menjadi produk yang lebih ringan dengan bantuan katalis dan gas hidrogen. Selain itu hydrocracking dapat didefinisikan sebagai proses produksi fraksi-fraksi ringan berkualitas tinggi dari minyak berat dengan bantuan hidrogen.

Pengukuran disini menggunakan alat instrumentasi yaitu alat yang berfungsi untuk mengukur parameter/variabel operasi suatu peralatan sebagai input untuk sistem pengendalian dan/atau sebagai informasi untuk operator. Sebagai contoh parameter operasi boiler dan heater yang diukur adalah temperatur, tekanan, laju alir dan ketinggian air (pada boiler).
